Dan Smolen is an author, podcaster, and a passionate advocate for members of the workforce who want to make their dreams of doing meaningful work come true.

In 2018, Dan ended a rewarding 20-year run in executive search, as founder and managing partner of the nationally recognized recruitment firm, The Green Suits, LLC. Throughout his career as a headhunter, he successfully placed hundreds of “best match” senior and mid-level professional talent in client companies. However, Dan recognized that even the most successful placements do not guarantee long-term happiness—especially for the hired professional.

That is why, in 2017, he launched The Tightrope with Dan Smolen podcast to bring the needs and desires of workers to the forefront. Aided by esteemed guests drawn from the world of business, academia, career empowerment, and public service, The Tightrope helps listeners overcome obstacles that they face in their efforts to do meaningful work—work that is profound, benefits people and the planet, and provides them satisfaction. The Tightrope podcast streams on Apple Podcast (iTunes), Google Play, SoundCloud, Stitcher Radio, and on the DanSmolen.com website.

Dan’s unique perspective on workforce issues was formed by a variety of work and personal experiences. Prior to his career as a recruiter, he was a successful senior marketing and sales executive supporting numerous consumer brands and social causes, including: Alitalia Airlines, American Cancer Society, American Lung Association, Cadillac Motor Division, CARE, Dreyfus, Kayser Roth Industries, Pepsi, 3M Company, and Toys “R” Us.

In 1999, Dan received a U.S. patent for a Method and Apparatus for Delivering Consumer Promotions. And, in 2010, he published his book, Tailoring the Green Suit: Empowering Yourself for an Executive Career in the New Green Economy.

A native of New Haven, Connecticut, Dan spent his adolescence in Montgomery County, Maryland. It was there, in 1978, that his lifelong involvement with environmental and social advocacy began. He is a member of Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2), a division of the Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC).

A graduate of the Ithaca College Park School of Communications in Ithaca, New York, he lives in the Northern Virginia Suburbs of Washington, D.C.
